Dance nationals are exciting, emotional, exhausting, and honestly… a whole lot of stuff.
This year, we have two nationals on the calendar. We just got back from our first one and are already getting ready to head out for our second one to close out the season. After a full year of convention weekends, competition days, hotel stays, costume changes, snack runs, makeup touch-ups, and late awards, I have learned one big thing:
Packing light is not optional. It is survival.
When you are traveling for nationals, you are not just packing clothes. You are packing costumes, shoes, makeup, hair tools, accessories, snacks, water bottles, chargers, emergency items, and all the little things you may or may not need while sitting around a convention center for hours.
And if you have ever had to check out of a hotel at 11 a.m. but your dancer is not done until 7 p.m., then you know exactly why having the right setup matters.
Why We Packed Differently This Time
For our first nationals this year, we kept our actual clothes simple. We packed all of our outfits into two small suitcases and then used our Hulken bag for competition-day essentials.
At the beginning of the season, I was honestly reluctant to get a Hulken. The last thing I thought I needed was another big bag to drag around.
But y’all… this thing has been a game changer.
Because on the last day, when we had to check out of the hotel at 11 but still had a full day ahead of us, we were able to keep costumes, makeup, snacks, water, and everything we needed in one rolling bag instead of lugging around all of our luggage.
That alone made it worth it.
The Biggest Lesson: Do Not Overpack for Nationals
It is so tempting to pack for every possible situation. I get it. Nationals feels bigger than a regular competition weekend, and you do not want to be caught without something important.
But overpacking makes everything harder.
You are carrying more through hotels, parking garages, convention centers, elevators, dressing areas, and long hallways. You are digging through bags trying to find one tiny thing. And by the end of the weekend, you are exhausted and wondering why you brought half your house.
This year, we kept it much simpler.
Here are the dance nationals packing essentials we actually used and loved.
Our Dance Nationals Packing Essentials
Rolling
Bag
The bag I did not think I needed… until I absolutely needed it. This rolling tote is perfect for hauling costumes, snacks, makeup, shoes, and all the dance day chaos without dragging around every suitcase we own.

Garment Bag for Costumes
These make costume changes so much easier because you can actually see what is inside. Perfect for keeping each costume, tights, accessories, and little extras together and ready to grab.

Portable Hanging Organizer
A dance mom lifesaver for makeup, lashes, lipstick, and all the tiny things that disappear when you need them most. I love that it hangs up and keeps everything easy to see, even in a crowded hotel bathroom or dressing room.

Hanging Organizer Hair Accessories
This little organizer is perfect for all the tiny dance-day things that somehow always go missing — hair ties, bobby pins, safety pins, sewing supplies, Q-tips, bandaids, and quick repair items. It hangs up, keeps everything easy to see, and saves you from digging through a bag five minutes before stage time.

Portable Steamer
A tiny but mighty must-have for wrinkled costumes, dresses, and travel outfits. It is perfect for quick touch-ups in the hotel room before heading to the venue — because nothing says dance weekend like pulling a costume out of a bag and praying the wrinkles cooperate.

Snack Boxes
Perfect for long nationals days when snacks are basically a survival strategy. These little snack boxes keep fruit, crackers, candy, nuts, and small treats separated and easy to grab between dances, awards, and all the waiting around. Bonus: having two means one for the dancer and one for mom… because we both know dance weekends require snacks.

Electric Lunch Box
Because nationals food prices are not for the faint of heart. This is perfect for bringing leftovers, pasta, chicken, rice bowls, or easy meals from the hotel and heating them up without hunting for a microwave. Such a smart way to save money, keep your dancer fed, and avoid living off concession stand snacks all weekend.

Refillable Water Bottle
A must-have for long dance days. We love one with a handle because we can buckle it right onto her dance bag and not worry about it getting lost in the chaos. Perfect for keeping water close between classes, rehearsals, performances, and awards — because hydration is not optional at nationals.

Portable Charger
An absolute must for nationals weekend. Between schedules, videos, photos, group texts, maps, and keeping up with competition updates, your phone battery does not stand a chance. A portable charger keeps everything powered up so you are not stuck hunting for an outlet when your dancer is about to go on stage.

Small First Aid Kit
One of those things you hope you do not need, but you will be so glad you packed. Perfect for keeping band-aids, pain reliever, wipes, and quick little “dance emergency” fixes together when long nationals days start catching up with everyone.

Magnetic Lashes
Magnetic lashes are a nationals must-have. They are easy to put on, easy to take off, and can be reused throughout the weekend — without dealing with messy lash glue or last-minute glue disasters before stage time. Fast, simple, and dance mom approved.

Portable Chair
A tiny-but-mighty chair that is perfect for nationals, competitions, long awards, and all the waiting around. I love that it folds down small enough to fit in a backpack or rolling bag, so you can have a seat without hauling around a bulky chair all day. Dance mom knees deserve support too.

Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are the secret to not turning your suitcase into a disaster zone by day two. They make it easy to separate outfits, pajamas, dance clothes, extras, and dirty laundry — especially when you are trying to pack light and still find what you need fast.

Portable Speaker
Perfect for quick run-throughs before going on stage, practicing in the hotel room, or warming up in a quiet corner before awards. It is small enough to toss in your rolling bag but loud enough to help your dancer rehearse without relying on your phone speaker. Total nationals essential.

Portable Chair
A cozy little lifesaver for cold convention centers, long awards, hotel downtime, or curling up between dances. Easy to toss in your rolling bag and perfect for those nationals days when you are waiting around for hours and the air conditioning is working overtime.
